How to Cook The Best Beef Tacos at Home

I’m a simple woman, I see beef tacos, I dive right in! These flavorful, easy-to-make classic beef tacos are perfect for a quick weeknight dinner or a casual gathering.

Ingredients:

  1. For the Beef Filling:
    • 1 lb (450g) ground beef (80-85% lean for the right balance of flavor and texture)
    • 1 packet taco seasoning (or make your own: 1 tsp chili powder, 1/2 tsp cumin, 1/2 tsp paprika, 1/4 tsp garlic powder, 1/4 tsp onion powder, 1/4 tsp oregano, 1/4 tsp salt, pinch of cayenne)
    • 1/4 cup water (to help the seasoning blend into the meat)
  2. For the Tacos:
    • 8-10 taco shells (hard shells or soft tortillas)
  3. Toppings (choose your favorites):
    • Shredded lettuce
    • Diced tomatoes
    • Shredded cheese (cheddar, Monterey Jack, or a Mexican blend)
    • Sour cream
    • Salsa or taco sauce
    • Sliced avocado or guacamole
    • Sliced jalapeños
    • Chopped cilantro
    • Lime wedges (for serving)

Method:

  1. Prepare the Ground Beef:
    • Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef, breaking it apart with a spatula as it cooks.
    • Cook the beef for about 6-8 minutes, stirring occasionally until it’s browned and fully cooked through. Drain any excess fat from the skillet if necessary.
  2. Add the Seasoning:
    • Once the beef is cooked, lower the heat to medium-low. Sprinkle the taco seasoning over the beef. If you’re using a homemade blend, mix all the spices together before adding.
    • Pour 1/4 cup of water in and stir everything together until the beef is evenly coated with the seasoning. Let it simmer for 2-3 minutes, allowing the sauce to thicken and the flavors to meld.
  3. Prepare the Taco Shells:
    • If you’re using hard taco shells, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the taco shells on a baking sheet and bake them for 5-6 minutes until crisp.
    • If using soft tortillas, warm them up in a dry skillet over medium heat for 1-2 minutes on each side, or wrap them in a damp paper towel and microwave for 30 seconds.
  4. Assemble the Tacos:
    • Spoon the seasoned beef into the taco shells or tortillas, filling each with a generous amount.
    • Add your choice of toppings: lettuce for crunch, tomatoes for freshness, cheese for that melty goodness, and any other toppings you love.
    • Serve with lime wedges for an extra zing of citrus.

Tips: Why I add A Splash of Lime Juice on top

A squeeze of fresh lime juice right before serving brightens up the rich flavors of the beef, adding a zesty freshness that balances the savory taste. Make sure to squeeze your lime and add it to your taco and you will not regret it!
